Petty joys are still joys

A friend texted me to say that our buddy's stepdaughter stopped reading Twilight because it wasn't as good as Truthseekers.

You can't take the sky from me

Yoinked from Rehena

"...the same fear that has kept me stuck in life so many times before, afraid to move forward, to take a step that would free me from the ordinary, the mundane, the insufferable. A crippling fear that deadens my potential and limits my relationship with the world. It's so easy to cling to the familiar, even when it's deplorable."

Slings & Arrows: Universal Truth

Great dialogue from the series Slings & Arrows:

Sloan: Okay, so why'd you kick another guy's ass for disparaging a girl you're not even with any more?

Geoffrey: Do you love Ellen?

Sloan: Fuckin' right!

Geoffrey: Well, if you feel the same way now as I did seven years ago, then you're going to spend the rest of your life kicking other people's asses for her whether you're with her or not. That's just how truly horrible life can be.

IN other news...

China Mieville is a brilliant fucking genius who simultaneously makes my brain hurt and makes me laugh out loud for the sheer genre-destroying joy of it all.

Holy Pageturner Batman

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is maybe the single most engrossing, page-turning read I've read in ... years.

Wow.

When I'm not reading it, I'm thinking about what I just read, or fantasizing about reading it.

Wow.

Just wow.

Clockpunk

So there's a few terms that have arisen from the classic sci-fi subgenre of cyberpunk...

Renaissance era parahistorical sci-fi: Clockpunk

Victorian era parahistorical sci-fi: Steampunk

Pulp era parahistorical sci-fi: Dieselpunk

So... can I invent a word too?

Cold War parahistorical sci-fi: Atomicpunk

How about...

Seventies British rocker parahistorical sci-fi: Punkpunk

Eye of Argon - Review

Written ages ago, reposted here for Pasley...

With an unbridled enthusiasm for his subject, author Jim Theis launches himself headlong into the incredible adventures of the barbarian warrior, Grignr. Displaying a thorough command of his thesaurus, Theis describes these adventures with an overwhelming attention to detail bordering on the fanatic. The tale may seem simplistic and at times even overwrought to the untrained eye, but a careful examination of the text displays a truly deep-seated love of the genre. His command of the stylistic nuances of fantasy literature truly must be read to be believed. The Eye of Argon, quite simply, has earned its place in the annals of fantasy literature, and I for one, am glad to have finished reading it. The recent discovery of the final pages of this literary prize must come as a relief to all true fantasy aficionados, for now finally can they attain closure with the fate of Grignr. Jim Theis, thank you for showing us all the potential that lies in fantasy literature.

Steven by Alice Cooper

I don't want to see you go,
I don't even want to be there.
I will cover up my eyes
And pray it goes away.
You've only lived a minute of your life

I must be dreaming,
Please stop screaming.

I don't like to hear you cry.
You just don't know
How deep that cuts me.
So I will cover up my eyes
And it will go away.
You've only lived a minute of your life

I must be dreaming,
Please stop screaming.

Steven!

Steven!

I hear my name. (Steven!)
Is someone calling me ?
I hear my name. (Steven!)

That icy breath,
It whispers, screams of pain.

I don't want to feel you die,
But if that's the way
That God has planned you,
I'll put pennies on your eyes
And it will go away, see ?
You've only lived a minute of your life

I must be dreaming,
Please stop screaming.

(Steven!)
(Is someone calling me ? - No)
(Steven!)
(I think I hear a voice,
It's outside the door.)
(Steven!)
I hear my name.
(Steven!)
(Is someone calling me ?
I hear my name.)
(Steven!)
(What do you want ?)
(Steven!)
(What do you want ?!)
(What do you want ?!!)
(Steven!)

Bad Days by The Flaming Lips

You're sorta stuck where you are
But, in your dreams you can buy expensive cars,
or live on mars and have it your way

And you hate your boss at your job
well in your dreams you can blow his head off
in your dreams
show no mercy

And all your bad days will end
And all your bad days will end
You have to sleep late when you can
And all your bad days will end (repeat)

Sometimes I get to see the oddest things, written in people's mortgage applications. One woman, as "Relation to Applicant" wrote, "Mother of Wendy."

This struck me as hilarious. An exclamation, as in "Great Caesar's Ghost!" or "Suffering Sappho!"

Thus:
"Mother of Wendy! It's July 26th already! Where do the days go?!"

When I say, "Sometimes I think of funny things," they're not always funny to everyone else. Sometimes they're not even funny to ANYone else.

I thought this was funny.
